On a warm spring morning, we popped into our local coffee shop for a caffeine fix and noticed a sign for a nearby dog adoption event. Sam—who had always been afraid of dogs—surprised me by saying, “Let’s go meet the pups.”

At a One Mutt at a Time Rescue Foundation event, one cocoa-colored pup with expressive eyebrows caught our eye. While all the other dogs barked and bounced, she sat quietly, calm and composed. We asked about her.

When I reached into the pen, she sniffed my hand and laid back down. That was it—we were in love.

We brought her home the next day and named her Java Chip. And just like that, our lives gained a new rhythm: wagging tails, morning cuddles, and coffee with purpose.
